Community Learning: Photography
Course overview
This course will allow you to build the skills you need to take better photographs, understand your camera, and express your ideas! Also, enjoy creating your own film and pictures, or editing your images digitally.
Connecting with like-minded individuals, you will get to share your images and exchange ideas in a welcoming environment. Participation and creativity can offer relief and increase your wellbeing, having a positive effect on your day to day life!
We’ll be offering a two-hour session on Friday afternoons 1-3pm, giving you plenty of time to experiment with photography. You can attend as many of the sessions as you wish!

Our Community Learning programme offers a series of FREE, government-funded courses to develop skills, knowledge, confidence and improve mental wellbeing for adults aged 19 or over (at the start of the course).

You will learn a variety of exciting photography skills, including:
- how to make the most of your any camera type, building your confidence in navigating the settings
- the basics of composition, lighting and visual storytelling
- using your camera on manual: how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work
- using natural and artificial lighting
- capturing successful portraits and landscape scenes
- visual storytelling techniques
- darkroom techniques
- basic digital post production
- image resolution and what it means
- making composite images
You will be led by a professional tutor to develop your photography skills, through a series of interactive workshops that will demonstrate equipment in the studio and the darkroom equipment, you will gain techniques to use beyond the studio.
Not to mention, you will have the opportunity to showcase and celebrate your achievements with an end of term exhibition!
As there are limited digital cameras available, please bring your digital camera or mobile phone and tripod if you have one.
