Sewing: Patchwork Tote Bag

Course overview

Join us for a creative introduction to sewing!

This sewing course is perfect for anyone looking to start sewing or build on existing skills. You’ll learn to sew your own patchwork tote bag, following step-by-step instructions and developing confidence in essential sewing techniques and construction. You’ll benefit from working in a small group with lots of individual attention, delivered in well-equipped and professional workshops.

Classes take place over 4 weeks on Thursday evenings from 6–8pm, led by expert tutor Isabella Bagwelll, who will guide you through each step of the process.

By the end of this sewing course, you will have learnt essential machine sewing skills, gained confidence, and created your own finished patchwork tote bag, ready to use.

You will learn how to:

  • Create a checkerboard patchwork design using two alternating fabrics
  • Understand and sew accurate seam allowances
  • Follow step-by-step written instructions
  • Construct and assemble a lined tote bag
  • Develop neat finishing techniques

You will learn through a combination of theoretical and practical sessions, covering:

  • Essential sewing and measuring techniques
  • Step-by-step construction of a simple checkerboard patchwork project
  • Working accurately with seam allowances
  • Simple bag construction and assembly
  • An overview of suitable fabrics and materials

You’ll receive individual instructions to guide you through your project.

Please bring your own fabric to create your bag.

You will need:

  • 1 metre of each of two different fabrics for the patchwork design. A medium-weight non-stretch fabric such as cotton, linen, or polycotton works best.
  • 1 metre of a lighter-weight fabric for the lining. Non-stretch cotton, linen, or polycotton work well here again.

Basic materials, such as thread, optional wadding, and interfacing, are provided. However, if you would like to colour-match your thread, you are welcome to bring your own.

We provide all the equipment, but it is a good idea to bring your own basic sewing kit, if you have one, including:

  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • Pins
  • Tape measure
  • Seam ripper (un-picker)

Additionally, a notebook, pencil, and eraser will be helpful for taking notes throughout the course.

Why not continue your creative journey with another of our sewing courses? Whether you’re looking to develop new techniques or take on a bigger project, there’s plenty to explore.
