Printmaking Art and Design

Course overview

Build confidence across a range of printmaking techniques while creating beautiful, unique designs and images.

You’ll have the chance to try many different methods or concentrate on researching and developing one, depending on your previous experience. Those with more experience are welcome to work on their own projects throughout the course, using the technique of their choice. You’ll be guided throughout by our expert tutor, Hector Garay.

Please note that this course does not run during half-term or end-of-term breaks.

This printmaking course allows you to explore experimentation, develop new techniques, and work on personal projects. It covers a range of traditional and non-traditional printmaking techniques, including:

  • The monotype technique
  • Relief printing, such as linocutting, rubber cutting, and rubber stamping
  • Layered relief printing, including mixed media and experimental approaches

You’ll be encouraged to share your findings with fellow course members and discuss technical challenges as part of a supportive, fun working group.

You can be as traditional or experimental as you like. Once inducted into the print room, you can choose to follow the course structure or use the facilities to develop your own work – depending on your level and experience.

All levels are welcome. You do not need any prior printmaking experience, but if you do have it, this course will help you build on what you already know.

Basic materials will be provided. If you’d like to continue with your own projects, you’re welcome to bring your own materials along.

Please bring any sketchbooks or drawings you have – these can serve as a great starting point for ideas and printed works. Your tutor will also be on hand to provide inspiration for new projects.

Please note that printmaking can be messy, so it’s advisable to wear old clothes. High heels and sandals are not permitted in the studio – please wear low, closed-toe footwear.
