Introduction to Sewing
If you are looking to start sewing with a machine but have no experience, then this course is perfect for you!
After this course, you can progress your sewing skills with our “Sewing your next garment” course.
There are a limited number of FREE places available on this course, for those aged 19 and over (at the start of the course) and who either have a mental health condition or difficulty, are employed and earning an annual salary less than £17,004 per annum, in receipt of state benefit in your own name and unemployed or working and earning less than £338 per month (or £541 for household claims), are a single parent, or have a social or emotional difficulty.
You will learn key sewing techniques, simple garment construction skills and how to work with easy fabrics.
This is a very practical course. By the end, you will have completed a simple garment, a paper pattern and embedded it onto a fabric of your choice.This should give you the confidence to start basic machine sewing independently.
You will need a basic sewing kit consisting of fabric scissors, small scissors, pins, thread, needles, tape measure and un-picker.
You will be provided with 1.5 meters of Calico. This is a plain-woven textile made from unbleached and often not fully processed cotton. The cost is included in your fee.
You will need to purchase 2m of your own woven fabric and a pattern for this course.
