Christmas Gift Wrap Printing Workshop: Botanical Monoprinting

Course overview

Give your presents a personal touch this Christmas with handmade wrapping paper you’ve printed yourself. In this relaxed three-hour workshop at Reading College, you’ll learn botanical monoprinting, a simple but striking printmaking technique that uses natural materials to create one-of-a-kind designs.

Using seasonal foliage, leaves, seed heads and other natural materials, you’ll explore colour, texture and pattern to create festive prints. Through experimentation and guided activities, with support from your tutor, you’ll learn how to build layered designs, make positive and negative impressions, and create repeating patterns.

By the end of the session, you’ll take home your own collection of hand-printed Christmas gift wrap. If time allows, you can also turn your sample prints into matching gift tags or cards.

During this workshop, you will:

  • Learn the fundamentals of botanical monoprinting.
  • Explore the use of seasonal foliage and natural materials to create prints.
  • Experiment with colour, layering, texture and composition.
  • Create positive and negative impressions using a variety of techniques.
  • Develop repeating patterns suitable for gift wrap design.
  • Produce a selection of unique hand-printed Christmas wrapping paper.
  • Gain confidence in creative printmaking processes.

There are no tests or exams. Your tutor will give demonstrations, guidance and individual feedback throughout the workshop, and you’ll see your progress in the gift wrap and prints you create.

All specialist materials and equipment are provided. Please bring:

  • Your own refreshments
  • An apron, or wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little ink or paint on
  • A folder, cardboard portfolio or large envelope to carry your prints home, as the ink may still be slightly tacky
  • Optional: a sketchbook and pencil for noting ideas and designs

Enjoyed printmaking? Try our Festive Printmaking: Handmade Christmas Cards in Lino, or continue your creative journey with one of our other adult art courses at Reading College.

This workshop is ideal for complete beginners, and you don’t need any printmaking experience. It’s also a great choice if you’re looking for a creative Christmas activity or want to make something special for the people you love.

You’ll be encouraged to experiment with your own ideas in a friendly and supportive environment. As every botanical print is unique, no two sheets of your gift wrap will ever be the same.
