Experimental Still Life Drawing and Painting
Course overview
This 10-week experimental still-life drawing and painting course invites you to rethink how you see and interpret the world.
Inspired by Modernist approaches, you will explore how to break down everyday objects into semi-abstract shapes, textures, and expressive forms. The focus is on painting with intention—moving beyond accuracy to capture energy, rhythm, and emotion through bold composition and unexpected colour choices.
You will develop skills in observational drawing alongside more experimental techniques. The course explores ways to simplify and distort form, use colour expressively, and build dynamic compositions. You will learn how to translate still-life subjects into layered, semi-abstract imagery, gaining confidence in mark-making, colour relationships, and visual storytelling.
This course is suitable for all levels, including beginners. No prior experience is necessary, just an interest in drawing and painting, and a willingness to experiment and try new approaches. You’ll be guided by expert tutor Beverly Sprio.
Please note: this course runs term-time only.
Learning will take place through tutor demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual experimentation. You will work from arranged still-life setups while being encouraged to interpret them freely. Group discussion, feedback, and one-to-one support will help you refine your ideas and develop your personal style in a supportive studio environment.
Basic drawing and painting materials will be provided. If you want to use a sketchbook or already have preferred materials, feel free to bring your own.
