Oxford Art Safari — JEWELLERY AND SILVERSMITHING SUMMER SCHOOL

Course overview

Create silver jewellery from scratch – or take your skills further – in an intensive week-long summer school.

There’s something quietly extraordinary about turning raw silver into something you’ll wear for years. This intensive week-long summer school gives you the time, space, and expert guidance to do exactly that – whether you’re picking up a jeweller’s saw for the first time or returning to the bench with ideas you’ve been waiting to develop.

Suitable for beginners, improvers and those returning to the craft after a break, this course is built around you. You’ll work at your own pace in a fully equipped studio, choosing the projects that interest you most – from rings and pendants to earrings and beyond – with individual guidance from expert tutor, Diana Estornel.

You will choose from set projects before working on your own designs at a pace appropriate to your skill level and experience, and with a maximum of 10 learners per class, you’ll get genuine one-to-one time, not just a nod from across the room.

Course Overview

You can choose the projects you wish to make – with plenty of books and samples on hand for you to investigate, should you need a little inspiration.

As a beginner, you will learn the techniques and processes to build your knowledge, skills and confidence in the workshop. You can follow set projects in ring-making, stone-setting, and pendant and earring-making, and you will be encouraged to pursue your own ideas.

As a maker with some experience, you can choose to follow intermediate projects and experiment with your own style and ideas, with a view to leaving with a new five-piece collection.

This jewellery-making course is suitable for beginners, improvers and refresher learners.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll start with a guided ring-making project to build your foundational skills before moving on to your own designs as your confidence grows.

If you already have some experience, you’ll use the week to develop your own ideas with design and technical support from your tutor.

Techniques covered include:

  • Design
  • Sawing and piercing
  • Annealing and forming
  • Texturing
  • Soldering
  • Doming
  • Chain-making
  • Polishing and finishing

You’ll receive individual feedback each session and have the chance to discuss your progress and next steps with your tutor.

This is a hands-on, workshop-based course combining group and individual technique demonstrations with independent making time. You’ll work at a pace that suits your skill level, with structured projects as a starting point and plenty of room to follow your own creative instincts.

You will receive individual tutor guidance, and your class will have a maximum of 10 learners.

No qualifications or prior experience are required for the beginner level – just enthusiasm for making something with your hands.

An apron and a notebook are useful to have. Please wear closed-toe shoes in the workshop at all times.
