Make a Trinket Box: 22-week Advanced Woodwork

Course overview

Elevate your woodworking skills with this comprehensive advanced course. You’ll master the construction of a complex dovetailed carcass with housed drawer dividers, while learning to create and fit traditionally built drawers. 

This course is designed for confident woodworkers who: 

  • are comfortable cutting dovetails 
  • know how to sharpen their tools 
  • want to enhance their skills and gain more practical experience in the workshop 

This woodworking course is led by experienced and qualified tutor Alex Chávez Smith and is held in the fully-equipped workshops of the renowned Rycotewood Furniture Centre. Places are limited to a maximum of eight learners and all materials and equipment are provided. 

This course runs term time only. 

 

You will practise and develop the following woodworking skills: 

  • traditional carcass construction with a back panel and dividers 
  • traditional drawer construction and fitting 
  • hand shaping techniques 
  • basic machining 
  • accurate layout 
  • finishing and oiling 

At the end of this course, you will have completed a trinket box with 3 fitted drawers.  

Our experienced tutor will provide group demonstrations and individual instruction, guidance and mentoring within a supportive learning environment.

 

This course is designed for confident woodworkers who have completed at least 1 beginner and 1 intermediate woodwork course on offer and have a very good understanding of jointing techniques. You should also: 

  • be comfortable cutting dovetails 
  • know how to sharpen their tools 
  • want to enhance their skills and gain more practical experience in the workshop 

All tools and materials are provided. If you have your own tools you are welcome to bring them.

Please wear stout closed footwear and clothes that you don’t mind getting covered in sawdust.

There are aprons, goggles, and ear defenders in the workshop that you are able to use but feel free to bring your own PPE if you prefer. It can get quite noisy at times.

On completion of the course, you will be ready to pursue your own DIY projects and/or progress to one of our other courses.
