Dog Grooming and Salon Management L3 Diploma

Course overview

The iPET Network L3 Diploma in Dog Grooming and Salon Management equips candidates with the skills and knowledge to groom various dog breeds. This nationally recognised qualification proves to employers or clients that candidates have the expertise for professional grooming. The diploma is awarded once the required skill level is achieved and remains relevant throughout a candidate’s career.

During the course, candidates will groom at least 20 dogs, covering at least 10 different breeds and 6 distinct coat types, gaining hands-on experience in areas such as prepping, bathing, scissoring, clipping, styling, and nail trimming. Additionally, the course covers essential topics like health and safety in a grooming salon, business management, and canine emergency first aid.

This course runs for two days per week, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Learning for the qualification is very practical with 6 hours of face to face teaching (practical and theory based) working alongside our highly qualified team of groomers and stylists. You will also be expected to complete at least 2 hours per week of independent learning to supplement the theoretical aspects of the course.

Uniquely, the qualification is earned through continuous assessment via practical demonstrations and coursework, with no formal exam. This approach ensures a balance of theoretical and practical learning, reducing the pressures associated with adult education. You will be expected to keep a practical portfolio and a question-based theory workbook portfolio on an e-learning platform. As part of the assessment process, you must demonstrate your grooming skills on 3 dogs within a set time limit.

To enrol on this course you should have either a Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistant qualification (with salon experience) or more than two years of salon experience and the ability to prove competencies with portfolio and references.

You will need a dog grooming tunic, apron, as well as safe, enclosed non-slip shoes, pen and notepad.

This course could lead you to the possibility of setting up your own dog grooming business (salon or mobile based) or progression into employment in a range of establishments/parlours as a Dog Groomer or Stylist. You could also progress to other related courses at the college in animal first aid, cat grooming or Emmi Pet Dental Care, all designed to further your career.

Once you enrol on a course, you will be contacted by a member of the Dog Grooming team for a phone or face-to-face interview. Your suitability and experience for the programme will be discussed, as well as any individual needs you may have.

Staff can support a variety of learning difficulties and disabilities if aware and funding permitting. Please contact us at least a month before the course start, if you think this may apply to you, so that we can look into this: gss@activatelearning.ac.uk
