Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship Standard

Course overview

The Level 5 Learning and Skills Teacher Apprenticeship offers a practical alternative to the traditional routes in teacher training, with a focus on developing teaching, learning and assessment practice for 14 + students.

This programme builds on the foundations of educational knowledge and theories, whilst developing a toolkit of skills and behaviours required to elevate your pedagogical methods.

With dedicated support from performance coaches, as well as guidance from experienced teachers and mentors, this programme facilitates the seamless implementation of practical strategies.

You will study the following units:

  • The lesson and the six strands
  • Establishing a positive learning climate
  • Assessment, feedback and questioning
  • How learners learn
  • Developing subject and curriculum
  • Developing classroom practice
  • Evaluating professionalism and reflective practice

Each block is split into:

  • constructing knowledge face to face (online or in person at two of our campuses)
  • asynchronous tasks to develop skills and apply knowledge
  • professional discussions to share good practice, review and reflect

You will be employed in a teaching capacity in a school, sixth form, educational training or post 16 sector setting.

In your employment you must be able to meet the requirement of 250 hours of teaching over the 18 months.

Your workplace must be able to provide a subject-specific mentor.

You will complete an EPA (end point assessment) and gain a gain a sector relevant Level 5 teaching qualification, which will enable you to pursue QTLS.

You will hold a relevant Level 2 GCSE in maths and English and a Level 3 or higher in a subject/vocational area. Apprentices who do not have a Level 2 in maths and English will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end point assessment.

You will need to demonstrate digital skills at Level 1.

The minimum age for entry to this apprenticeship is 18 and there is a requirement to undergo an enhanced DBS check.

Following the successful completion of this course you would be able to pursue QTLS. You could progress the Education and Lifelong Learning BA Top up degree.
