Course overview

This five-week evening course offers a welcoming and creative environment in which to develop your drawing and painting skills. Designed for learners of mixed ability, the course is ideal whether you are returning to art, building confidence, or looking to refresh and extend your existing practice.

You will explore the essential elements of drawing and painting through a variety of subjects, including still life and portraiture. Sessions will focus on developing observational skills, understanding proportion, tone, composition, and mark-making, while encouraging personal expression and creative exploration.

Your tutor, Pat Lewis, is a practising artist who brings professional insight and enthusiasm to the classroom. Through a combination of demonstrations, practical exercises, and individual guidance, Pat will introduce a range of materials and techniques, supporting you to work creatively and with growing confidence.

Throughout the course, you will be guided through different themes and approaches to successful observational studies, with opportunities to experiment, share ideas, and learn alongside others. This course is perfect for adult learners who would like to enjoy creative learning in a relaxed and supportive setting while developing their artistic skills at their own pace.

During this course, you will learn:

  • through developing your existing skills using traditional methods of mark making
  • painting techniques for expressive painting
  • to create linear drawings
  • how to use tone to create depth in an image
  • to create effective compositions and use colour to contrast and compliment
  • ways to employ mixed media for interesting artworks

This course welcomes experienced and beginner artists. You will learn through a mixture of explanation and demonstration. Exercises in independent and group activities will allow for you to use many approaches and techniques. Also, peer support and one to one guidance will assist you in your artistic journey.

Basic materials will be provided, yet feel free to bring any of your own materials.
