Introduction to Woodcarving (INTENSIVE))

Course overview

Carve Your Own Original Leaf Relief Using Traditional Hand Tools

A great way to explore the sculptural possibilities of wood, this two-day intensive course introduces you to the skills and techniques of traditional woodcarving. Using chisels, gouges, and a mallet, you will create an original ornamental leaf relief carving of your own design.

The course is led by qualified local tutor Ellis Stacey, and is held in the fully-equipped workshops of the renowned Rycotewood Furniture Centre. Places are limited to a maximum of ten learners and all materials and equipment are provided.

Quiet and methodical by nature, hand tool woodcarving can be a very mindful activity and we hope that you will find this course to be relaxing and fun as well as informative. At the end of the course, you will take your carving home and will hopefully have the skills and confidence to pursue further woodworking projects and/or attend another of our classes.

Perfect For:

  • Novice or experienced woodworkers
  • Those looking to improve existing skills
  • Anyone interested in traditional craftsmanship

In a relaxed, fun and supportive learning environment, you will be introduced to the basics of holding and cutting with gouges, identifying and working with the wood grain and sharpening and maintaining carving tools.

You will then be introduced to working in relief, where the subject stands out from the background surface rather than being set in, before designing, composing and then modelling your own project.

The core skills taught during this course are:

Foundational techniques including accurate measuring and marking, timber selection and preparation, safe tool handling and maintenance.

Hand tool carving techniques using chisels, gouges, rasps & files, mallets and more.

Specialised Skills such as composing relief designs and carving with the grain direction.

By the end of this course, you will take home your own finished relief carving and have the skills and confidence to pursue further woodcarving projects.

Our experienced tutor will provide group demonstrations and individual instruction, guidance and mentoring within a supportive learning environment.

All tools and materials are provided.

Please wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear and clothes that you don’t mind getting covered in sawdust. Aprons, goggles, and ear defenders are available in the workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own PPE if you prefer. It can get quite noisy at times.?

On completing this course, you will have the skills and confidence to pursue your own woodcarving projects or progress to another of our courses at the Rycotewood Furniture Centre.
