Blueprints: A Cyanotype Saturday Morning Course

Course overview

Discover the magic of cyanotype printing in this relaxed, creative adult learning course. Over three Saturday mornings, you’ll explore this historic photographic printing process, known for its distinctive deep blue tones. Working with light-sensitive chemicals and widely available materials, you’ll learn how to create striking prints using plants, objects, and photographic negatives.

This course is ideal for beginners and those with some creative experience who want to experiment, slow down, and enjoy hands-on making in a supportive, friendly environment.

What is Cyanotype?
Cyanotype is a camera-less photographic printing process that produces a striking, monochrome Prussian blue image. Invented in 1842 by English scientist Sir John Herschel, it relies on light-sensitive iron salts that react to ultraviolet light (like sunlight) and are developed by simply rinsing in water.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Learn how to safely prepare and use cyanotype chemistry
  • Explore composition using natural materials and objects
  • Create prints using sunlight, as well as with our professional UV exposure machine
  • Experiment with toning and layering
  • Print onto a variety of surfaces such as paper, fabric or wood
