Course overview
Join Leys residents and fellow enthusiasts on a journey to explore and appreciate the night sky.
This introductory community astronomy course is FREE and is designed to open up new interests, inspiring future career paths. It will bring together people with a passion for understanding our universe and sharing knowledge and the beauty of the night sky.
Sessions will be led by expert tutor Natty Mark Samuels, founder of Betelgeuse – African School

You are welcome to join us on whichever dates you can (term-time only), with a prompt start at 6 pm.

This course covers the celestial objects that populate our skies—their origins, locations, and interactions. You’ll discover the stories of pioneering astronomers throughout history and today, explore the technology behind space programmes, telescopes, and observatories, and learn about the cultural and folklore traditions that different civilisations have woven around the stars.
You’ll engage with interactive materials, participate in discussions, work with star maps, and enjoy video presentations. You’ll also benefit from expert guidance and guest speakers, including Leys Satellite Club founder Natty Mark Samuels, who will share their knowledge and enthusiasm.
This course welcomes participants aged twelve and over. Young people under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
Just bring a notebook and pen to take notes and record your observations.
Once you’ve completed this introduction, you can continue your astronomical education through professional development courses or pursue formal qualifications such as a college or university certificate or degree in astronomy or related fields.
Natty Mark Samuels is a writer and the founder of African School.
In February 2026, Natty Mark began an Open University bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences. He withdrew in April due to the lack of astronomy content. In September, he begins studying towards a BSc (Hons) Astronomy with Lancashire University.
