Introduction to Chinese Freestyle Painting

You will be introduced to:

• The philosophical principles underlying Chinese painting (harmony with nature, qi energy, balance)
• Traditional brush techniques using bamboo brushes
• Colour application with Chinese paint
• Composition principles unique to Eastern art traditions
• The ‘Four Gentlemen’ of Chinese painting: bamboo, orchid, plum blossom, and chrysanthemum
• Simple landscape elements, including mountains, water, and mist

You will benefit from:

• Analysis of classical Chinese paintings and their techniques

This painting course is suitable for complete beginners—no drawing experience necessary.

We advise comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement.

All basic materials are included in your course fee (brushes, ink, paper, paints), but the following are recommended:

• A protective smock or old shirt to protect clothing
• A folder or portfolio to transport your work home safely
• Optional: any Chinese painting supplies you may already own
