Functional Skills Online – Maths

Looking to build your confidence with numbers? Our Functional Skills Maths course is a great place to start.

We currently offer Level 1 only as a starting point. Once you complete it, you can move on to Level 2. You won’t be able to join Level 2 directly – but don’t worry, we’ll support you every step of the way.

Courses Details

Before starting, you’ll do a short initial assessment to see where you should begin:

  • Level 1 – a 15-week course
  • Level 2 – an 18-week course (you’ll progress to this after completing Level 1)

This step-by-step approach helps you build your skills and confidence before moving to the next level.

  • One online lesson per week (2.5 hours)
  • Weekly assessments to track your progress
  • Daily 5–10 minute learning challenges to keep your skills sharp
  • Up to 3 mock exams to prepare you for the real thing
  • Self-study materials available anytime on our learning platform
  • 24/7 access to extra practice on Century Maths

Courses follow the Activate Learning term-time calendar, so there are no lessons during half-term, Christmas, or Easter holidays.

Once you’re enrolled, your tutor will be in touch a few days before the course begins. They'll give you everything you need – joining instructions and your lesson schedule.

You’ll get your IT login details by email within 48 hours of enrolment. All course materials are on our learning platform, ALO, and tutors may share extra resources to support your learning.

We recommend 5–10 hours of independent study per week, in addition to your lessons.

If you don’t get your login details in time, please contact our team at:

remoteenquiries@activatelearning.ac.uk

Your final exam will take place in person at a local exam centre in January 2026. You’ll choose your exam centre during the initial assessment.

Not sure which centre you picked? Your tutor will help confirm it once your course begins.

You can choose from five centres:

You can sit your exam at one of the following centres:

  • Oxfordshire: City of Oxford College & Banbury and Bicester College
  • Berkshire: Reading College & Bracknell and Wokingham College
  • Surrey: Guildford College

Please note: The Functional Skills Maths exam includes two parts – one with a calculator and one without. You’ll take both as part of one full exam, and your result will combine both papers.

Our course is designed to start with the basics and gradually build your skills, all at a pace that suits you.

To pass Functional Skills Maths, you’ll need to complete two parts:

  1. Section A (Non-Calculator)
  2. Section B (Calculator)

If you’re looking for a flexible, supportive way to improve your Maths skills and work towards a nationally recognised qualification, this course is a great choice.
