Functional Skills Online – English

Build your confidence in reading, writing, and communication with our Functional Skills English courses. These online courses are flexible, supportive, and designed to help you succeed, whatever your starting point.

We offer courses at Entry 3 and Level 1, with the option to progress to Level 2 once you’re ready.
You can’t apply directly to Level 2, but don’t worry – we’ll help you get there step by step.

Courses Details

Everyone begins by completing a short initial assessment. This helps us understand your current level and place you on the right course.

Progression route:

  • Entry 3 – a 15-week course (our starting level, ideal if you’re new or want to refresh your skills)
  • Level 1 – a 15-week course
  • Level 2 – an 18-week course (you’ll move on to this after successfully completing Level 1)

This pathway helps you build strong skills and confidence before moving on to higher levels.

  • One online lesson per week (2.5 hours)
  • Weekly assessments to track your progress
  • Daily 5–10 minute learning challenges to keep your skills sharp
  • Up to 3 mock exams to prepare you for the real thing
  • Self-study materials available anytime on our learning platform
  • 24/7 access to extra practice on Century English

Courses follow the Activate Learning term-time calendar, so there are no lessons during half-term, Christmas, or Easter holidays.

Before your course starts, your tutor will get in touch with:

  • A course introduction
  • Joining instructions
  • Your weekly schedule

You’ll get your IT login details by email within 48 hours of confirming your place. All your learning materials are on our online platform, ALO, and your tutor may share extra resources to help you.

We recommend 5–10 hours of independent study each week, in addition to your online lesson.

If you haven’t received your login or have any issues, please email: remoteenquiries@activatelearning.ac.uk

Your final exams are held in person at a local exam centre at the end of the course. You’ll choose your exam centre during your initial assessment.

If you’re unsure which centre you chose, your tutor will help you confirm it once the course begins.

You can sit your exam at one of the following centres:

  • Oxfordshire: City of Oxford College & Banbury and Bicester College
  • Berkshire: Reading College & Bracknell and Wokingham College
  • Surrey: Guildford College

Our course is designed to start with the basics and gradually build your skills, all at a pace that suits you.

To pass Functional Skills English, you’ll need to complete three parts:

  1. Reading (exam at the end of the course)
  2. Writing (exam at the end of the course)
  3. Speaking & Listening (assessed during your online lessons)

If you’re looking for a flexible, supportive way to improve your English and work towards a nationally recognised qualification, this course is a great choice.
