Woodwork Entry-level: an introduction to woodcarving
Course overview
This six-week entry-level course is an opportunity to discover your creative side. It’s an ideal starting point or refresher for those wanting to explore wood carving and the sculptural possibilities of wood.
In a small group, with a maximum of eight learners, you will complete an introductory exercise before developing your own project to work towards, at your own pace, in a supportive workshop setting.
Participants will be introduced to a number of skills and techniques, including:
- the characteristics and properties of different wood types.
- the use of hand carving, shaping and sculpting tools, such as saws, chisels, gouges, spokeshaves, files and rasps.
- basic sculptural composition.
You will work at our renowned centre of excellence, Rycotewood Furniture Centre, taught by alumnus Ellis Stacey.
This is a hands-on practical course that will mainly be delivered verbally, through demonstration and 1:1 assistance, guidance and support.
All tools, materials and safety equipment required are supplied, but please bring a pencil and stationery.
Please wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dusty and stout footwear (not sandals, canvas etc)
City of Oxford College offers a broad variety of Woodwork courses to develop and build on your woodwork skills.
