Spanish – Beginners

Course overview

Discover your passion and learn a language in a fun, relaxed environment. This course is an introduction to the language and culture of Spain!

You’ll learn in a fun and supportive environment through a variety of engaging activities.

On completion, you will be able to communicate with sympathetic native speakers using basic phrases in a variety of everyday situations.

Examples of topics included:

  • Simple conversation
  • Booking a hotel room
  • Ordering food in a restaurant
  • Useful tourist information
  • Directions
  • Shopping

Semester 1 (Oct-February) – No prior knowledge of the language is necessary. All you’ll need is a keen interest to learn!

Semester 2 (February-July) – You do not need to have completed Semester 1, however you will need to have 20 hours previous study of the language in an adult class or previous learning of a similar length.

Please note: this course does not run during the half-term/end-of-term breaks.

 

You will be introduced to the language to enable you to communicate effectively in everyday situations at a basic level using all four language skills: speaking, writing, listening and reading.

  • Learn to speak about yourself, meet and greet people.
  • Order food and drink in a bar and restaurant; ask for the bill.
  • Understand directions and book a hotel room.
  • Go shopping for food and clothes and be confident using public transport
  • An introduction to basic understanding of the grammar.
  • Learn about a variety of aspects of the culture in the countries where the language is spoken.

Please note: this course does not lead to a formal qualification.

You’ll learn in a fun and supportive environment through a variety of engaging activities.

The tutor will use a range of resources (videos, games, role-plays, and handouts) to supplement the course book.

 You will be introduced to the language to enable you to communicate effectively in the target language in everyday situations at a basic level using all four language skills: speaking, writing, listening and reading.

Teaching methods include:

  • Audio/visual stimulation
  • Teacher-led, formal instruction
  • Group and pair work
  • Discussions

You will have the chance to practise using use the language in real-life situations through fun and engaging role plays and lively group discussions.

You will also have access to your class learning resources through your college’s online account and will be advised on your target language specialised websites for home learning.

For this course you will initially need a notebook and pens. Your tutor will let you know about textbooks and other learning materials that you may wish to utilise.

After successfully completing Semester 2 you will progress onto our Improvers course.

All language courses run term-time only.
