Oxford Art Safari – Exploring Creativity in Summer: RAKU

Course overview

Indulge your passion for ceramics and pottery in an immersive exploration of Raku firing! This captivating course invites adults of all skill levels to delve into the ancient art of Raku pottery, where fire, water, and earth converge to create stunning and unpredictable results.

Originating from Japan in the late 16th century, Raku firing is renowned for its rapid glaze firing process, while smoke firing boasts a rich history dating back some 30,000 years. In this course, you’ll have the opportunity to craft and fire your own pots, each one a unique masterpiece. With no two pots alike, each piece embodies its own story and character, making for a truly enchanting experience.

At the end of the course, you’ll proudly take home your own beautiful Raku pot, a tangible reminder of your journey into the ancient art of pottery.

Be prepared to go home smelling of bonfires after your class on Tuesday 23rd July!

 

Working with the elements of fire, water and earth you’ll explore the pottery firing techniques known as ‘Raku’ and ‘smoke firing’.

Raku is a low firing technique connected to a rich cultural and spiritual heritage where there is still much to be discovered, experienced and shared. 

You’ll learn about reduction and oxidation kilns. The thermal shock properties of clay, and the process as a whole make for a highly experimental process with dramatic and unpredictable results!

With all basic materials provided, you’ll have everything you need to explore this ancient craft. Prepare to don your old clothes, a cosy coat, and sensible footwear as you embrace the sensory experience of working with clay and fire. And be prepared to go home smelling of bonfires after class on Tuesday 23rd July!

Don’t forget to pack a refillable water bottle, and any additional refreshments (lunch for 23 July) to keep you fuelled.
