Discovering Printmaking (WHH)
Course overview
Discover the creative world of printmaking in this inspiring Thursday afternoon course, taught by our experienced tutor and printmaker, Camilla Sopwith. This course welcomes both complete beginners and more experienced artists. You’ll be introduced to a range of exciting printmaking techniques – including monoprinting, drypoint etching and linocutting – and explore how each process can be used to create expressive, layered and unique artworks in a relaxed, supportive, well-equipped studio environment.
During the course, you will:
- Experiment with monoprinting, exploring colour, texture, and expressive mark-making.
- Learn the fundamentals of drypoint etching, including how to create lines, tones, and textures on a printing plate.
- Develop skills in linocutting, from designing and carving your lino block to producing crisp, striking prints.
- Gain confidence in using printing tools, inks, rollers, and presses.
- Build an understanding of composition, layering, and creative problem-solving in printmaking.
- Create a collection of prints and test pieces that capture your progress and personal style.
You’ll learn through a combination of tutor demonstrations, hands-on practical activities, and personalised guidance from your tutor. Each session allows time to experiment, develop your own ideas and receive supportive feedback. You’ll be encouraged to work at your own pace and explore a variety of techniques in a friendly, creative space.
Between sessions, you’ll be encouraged to spend a little time gathering visual references and inspiration – a small investment that makes a big difference to your work in the studio. Expect a relaxed, creative atmosphere where questions are always welcome.
All specialist printmaking tools and materials are provided, so there’s no need to invest in equipment before you begin. The course is open to adults of all experience levels – complete beginners are very welcome. Please note that printmaking can get a little messy, so wearing older clothes or bringing an apron is recommended.
Please bring along:
- An apron or old shirt
- A sketchbook or any images and visual references you’d like to draw on
- Your favourite drawing tools (optional)
- Curiosity and a willingness to try something new

Please note: Students will need to spend a small bit of their own time between classes on visual reference research.
