Pottery and Ceramics for All
Course overview
This part-time pottery course invites you to explore a wide range of ceramic processes in our well-equipped studio.
Beginners will be guided through various hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling, slab-building, potters’ moulds, and the potters’ wheel. Throughout the course, you’ll receive personalised support to develop confidence in understanding clay qualities, making techniques, decorative skills, and glazing.
Returning learners are encouraged to build upon their existing skills to design and create more complex and refined work inspired by their individual interests and personal goals.
You’ll learn in a relaxed and supportive environment with excellent facilities, taught by our expert tutors:
- Monday evening – Katy Kennedy
- Tuesday daytime – Sue Mundy
- Tuesday evening – TBC
- Wednesday daytime – Caz Dowdall
- Wednesday evening – Katy Kennedy
Students will be required to work independently at times, allowing for personal exploration and creative development. This independent learning approach helps build confidence and self-reliance in your ceramic practice while still having expert guidance available when needed.
Once fired in the kiln, you will be able to take home your own handmade pieces. Due to kiln capacity and materials, we can only process a limited number of clay pieces per student throughout the course.
Important Information
The materials fee is included in the cost of this course. In consideration of our studio’s kiln capacity and material resources, we discourage turning out large volumes of work equivalent to more than approximately 1 bag of clay per learner per course. Any work exceeding this amount will be charged at £5 per kilo.
This course runs term-time only.
Beginners will follow a programme of projects which introduce them to a range of sculpting and decorating techniques.
More experienced learners can be set more challenging projects or work on their own design ideas. All learners are supported by the tutor throughout each project.
You will design and make ceramic pieces through various techniques and processes such as:
- throwing
- hand-building
- glaze application
- decorating techniques
- firing
Teaching methods include:
- formal instruction
- discussion
- individual tuition
- practical demonstration
- practical experience
Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to develop your skills according to your own specific needs.
While some prior experience in ceramics/pottery would be beneficial, it’s not essential as you’ll work at your own pace and level. We encourage you to bring along your project ideas, and our tutor will provide personalised support throughout each creative endeavour.
You will need to bring:
- a sketchbook and something to write with
- a towel
- apron/or wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy
- enthusiasm for the subject and a willingness to learn!
You may wish to bring hand cream and a dust mask. If you have sensitive skin, you may also wish to bring a pair of washing-up gloves.
You must wear flat, closed-toe shoes as this is a safety requirement. Working with clay can get very messy!
Please note: this course does not run during the half-term or end-of-term breaks.
