What subjects do you teach?

I teach Level 1 and Level 2 Dog Grooming at Merrist Wood College  for anyone wishing to become a dog grooming assistant. I teach Level 1, which is a shorter, Merrist Wood certificate, alongside Amy. I have previously taught Level 3 in Dog Grooming and Salon Management, certificated by Ipet Network.

How many years have you been teaching?

I have been teaching for 3 years and prior to gaining my qualifications, I trained members of staff and apprentices for over 10 years.

What do you enjoy about teaching adults?

I enjoy new people coming into the world of grooming and watching their confidence build over the course; seeing that they are learning a new skill that they can take away, and knowing dog grooming is more than just giving a dog a good haircut. They take away skills like reading a dog’s behaviour/body language, being able to adapt to the dog’s needs, knowing how to handle a dog correctly and safely, and making grooming a better experience for themselves and the dog.

What got you into your chosen field?

While at college I had to do work experience where one of my placements was with a local dog groomer. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was then offered a Saturday job while I finished college. I then became a full-time member of the team and, over the years, worked my way up.

What other passions/interests do you have?

Outside of work I enjoy swimming and helping out at a friend’s horse stables.

Why should someone join your classes?

If you like hands-on work and love dogs, this is the class for you. My classes are all practical from the first day, and you will learn from the very beginning. Although there is some theory work towards the end of the day, I try to make my classes as fun and interactive as possible.
