Course overview
Whether you’re new to allotment gardening or looking to boost your growing confidence, this practical course is designed to guide you through the growing seasons, from planning and planting to harvesting and maintenance.
By the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to grow a wide range of vegetables, and herbs.
There are three parts to this course. You are welcome to join us for a single group of sessions, or all three.

No prior experience is necessary—just enthusiasm, a pair of gloves, and a love for fresh, homegrown produce!
You’ll be fully-prepared to make the very most of your allotment:
- Planning your Allotment
- Soil Health and Preparation
- Sowing and Planting Techniques
- Crop Rotation and Companion Planting
- Watering, Feeding and Weeding
- Pest and Disease Management
- Seasonal Tasks and Timings
- Sustainable Growing Practices
- Harvesting and Storage
Sessions will be hands-on, taught by our expert horticulture tutor.
This is a Learning for Leisure course, so there are no assessments.
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. However, a good degree of physical fitness is necessary, as some practical tasks may be physically demanding.
Boots: You must wear sturdy footwear as you will be working on uneven ground. Steel-toe-capped boots are ideal, but any strong, supportive outdoor footwear will do.
Gardening Gloves: A good quality pair of gloves is essential for handling soil, tools, and plants safely.
All-Weather Clothing: This course takes place outdoors in all conditions. Please dress appropriately for the weather, whether it’s rain, wind, or sunshine.
Being properly equipped will help you stay comfortable and safe.

Any produce harvested during the course will be shared between Activate Learning resources, Merrist Wood animals, and students enrolled on the course to support learning, sustainability, and animal welfare.
Free car parking is available onsite.
