Course overview
This hands-on 5-week course—perfect for all skill levels—invites you to explore a diverse range of printmaking techniques through practical experience and guided experimentation.
Gain experience in using the printmaking workshop and associated tools and materials safely and effectively. You will be able to develop your images from personal sources and projects and discover how printmaking can have a transformative effect on your initial sketches, designs or ideas. You will be guided by expert tutor Hector Garay-Airaghi.
Beginners: Follow our structured, step-by-step introduction to various printmaking processes, building confidence and skills from the ground up.
Experienced artists: Develop your personal projects with expert guidance, refining your technique and expanding your creative boundaries.
All essential materials and equipment are provided.
f you are new to printmaking, you will learn a range of techniques—lino printing, dry point and collagraph—by taking a step-by-step approach to methods and an experimental approach to image making.
Intermediate and advanced learners will be able to work on self-directed projects with expert guidance and will be encouraged to build on their previous experience, as well as continue experimenting and developing their images.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
Beginners:
- prepare and use lino and card as printing blocks for relief and intaglio
- prepare paper for printing
- print blocks to good standards in monochrome and colour
Intermediate and more advanced learners:
- explore personal imagery through various printmaking processes
- engage in advanced technical processes
- develop the content of your work further
A range of methods will be utilised to support your creative journey:
- Demonstration
- Practical exercises
- Group and individual advice and feedback
- Short group discussion.
- The course is suitable for students of all ability levels.
- Basic drawing skills would be an advantage, but are not essential.
- You should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English for both health and safety purposes and to enable you to follow printmaking procedures.
- You should be able to take short written notes for your own use and occasionally make simple measurements using a ruler.
- Basic materials—inks, standard-quality paper, and general communal workshop sundries—are included in the course fees.
- Please bring along sketches, photographs or other visual resources as a starting point for the first session.
- Our printmaking workshop can get quite messy, so please wear sensible clothing and shoes.
