Print, Paint, Sew, Layer: Introduction to Collage and Mixed Media
Course overview
This 6-week art course invites learners to explore the rich and dynamic world of Collage and Mixed Media through a diverse and innovative approach to creative expression, guided by expert tutor Jezella Pigott.
Integrating both digital and traditional techniques, this art course explores an endlessly creative process that uses very few tools to make a vast array of artwork.
Collage is an endlessly creative process that uses very few tools to making a vast array of artworks for your creative practice. You will explore a range of approaches to collage making – including stitching, layering and peeling/ripping/folding.
There will be weekly themes for each collage session—such as botanical portraits—using vintage plant illustrations, and we will take inspiration from several contemporary artists working in this field today.
This is a chance to rediscover your creative voice, try something new, and enjoy the process without pressure. You’ll leave with a portfolio of expressive collage work—and maybe a whole new way of seeing the world around you.
You will work with an eclectic mix of materials, including found images from magazines and books, personal drawings, monoprints, and paintings.
Digital and Analogue Processes: The course integrates both digital and traditional techniques. You will learn to use Photoshop to manipulate existing images, which can then be incorporated into analogue collage compositions.
This will include:
- basic printmaking skills – monoprinting and screenprinting – both will involve using found and own drawings to work from to then cut and collage into final works.
- working with playful mediums such as watercolour/inks/gouache – using simple water washes and layering colours to use in the collage making process.
- observational drawing techniques—working from taxidermy/found animal skulls/crystals and other found natural objects.
You will be able to take a playful approach to compostions and layouts throughout the course.
Whether you’re returning to art or picking up scissors and glue for the first time in years, this course offers a playful, accessible route into creative experimentation.
You will be taught how to collage through:
- guided demonstrations and hands-on activities
- 1-to-1 support and relaxed group feedback
- Inspiring visuals and short videos showcasing collage artists’ past and present
- optional use of Photoshop for those curious about blending digital and analogue techniques
Please bring along:
- Your sketchbook or anything that inspires you
- Any personal materials you’d like to collage with: old books, magazines, wallpaper, photos, fabric—can be scanned and used in collages or make drawings/prints from etc.
- Clothes you don’t mind getting messy!
