Introduction to Lino Printing: Discover the Art of Relief Printmaking

Course overview

Our 6-week Introduction to Lino Printing course has been designed specifically for adult beginners with little or no previous experience in printmaking. This hands-on printing workshop will guide you through the fascinating world of relief printing using linoleum as your creative medium.

Lino printing is an accessible and versatile printmaking technique that allows you to create beautiful prints with bold lines and striking textures. Over the course, you’ll develop core skills to design, carve, and print your own unique lino blocks. From simple one-colour prints to more complex multi-layered designs, you’ll explore various techniques while developing your own artistic style.

Our supportive, small-group environment ensures personalised attention as you progress from foundational skills to creating finished artworks. By the end of the course, you’ll have produced a collection of prints and the confidence to continue developing your lino printing skills.

Please note: two of the scheduled groups of sessions are 5 weeks long.

You will gain confidence with:

  • Design principles for effective lino prints, including composition, positive/negative space, and texture
  • Safe carving techniques using professional lino cutting tools
  • Proper inking methods for consistent, high-quality prints
  • Registration techniques for precise multi-colour printing
  • Creative experimentation with colour, layering, and mixed media

Our teaching approach combines structured guidance with creative exploration:

  • Demonstrations and tutorials from your experienced instructor
  • Hands-on practice with immediate feedback and support
  • Step-by-step projects that build skills progressively
  • Access to quality materials and equipment during class time

All basic materials and equipment will be provided. Our printmaking workshop can get quite messy, so please wear sensible clothing and shoes.

Do bring along:

  • An apron or an old shirt to protect your clothing
  • A folder or portfolio to transport your prints home

Optional items:

  • Your own lino cutting tools, if you have them
  • Any special papers you’d like to experiment with
  • Reference books or images for inspiration

You may wish to repeat this multi-level printmaking course to further develop your practice, or perhaps focus on one technique or process. Alternatively, you might enrol on one of our other printmaking courses.
