Digital Photography: the next step
Course overview
Ready to move beyond the basics and bring more creativity and control to your photography?
This intermediate-level digital photography course is perfect for those who already understand the fundamentals of their DSLR or mirrorless camera and are comfortable shooting in semi-automatic modes — but want to start exploring full Manual mode, using light more deliberately and capturing more intentional, artistic images.
We’ll dive deeper into:
- Mastering Manual Mode — full creative control over your camera
- A refresher on core manual settings: ISO, White Balance, Shutter Speed, and Aperture
- Creative use of natural and artificial light
- Stronger composition techniques to create more intentional images
- Simple post-processing tips to enhance your photos after shooting
Whether you’re photographing portraits, products, landscapes, or still life, this course will help you refine your technique and grow your confidence behind the camera.
You will learn to build on the basic operations of a digital SLR camera (and mirrorless, see below for details), along with developing techniques to produce individual and creative outcomes.
We will talk about light and composition, and photographing on manual mode. If you would like to use a mirrorless camera, please ensure that you can turn off auto settings (aperture priority, shutter priority, manual) and you can set your ISO and white balance manually.
Some simple post-processing techniques will also be covered.
This course provides no formal qualification but will enable you to either develop your personal use of a DSLR camera or to progress on to any of the following courses:
- Analogue Photography
- Advanced Creative Photography
- Photoshop for Beginners
- Bookbinding for Beginners
- or a full-time photography course at college
Alongside the other evening courses, this course will aid the production of a comprehensive portfolio of work.
You will learn in our well-equipped classrooms and facilities, supported by an industry-experienced tutor, working individually and in a small group.
The emphasis of these courses is on developing a creative use of your camera.
Courses will involve some optional homework to fully benefit from the teaching.
A digital SLR camera is essential.
Ideally, you will have completed our Beginners Photography course, or at least have an ability to shoot confidently in manual mode.
Access to a computer and printer is useful.
Please note: You are welcome to bring along your own refreshments. There is a vending machine onsite, if required.
