Whether you’re heading to a festival, the beach, or your local park—do it in style with your own handmade bucket hat!
This fun and practical workshop is perfect for beginners and improvers alike. Over the course of a relaxed, sociable day, you’ll learn how to create a bucket hat that’s as functional as it is fashionable — offering both sun protection and a bold summer statement.
You’ll leave not only with a finished hat but with the essential hat-making techniques, and the confidence to make more at home

You will cover:
- How to select appropriate fabrics for headwear (considering weight, durability, and sun protection)
- Understanding pattern pieces and sizing for headwear
- Proper cutting techniques for curved shapes
- Working with interfacing to create structure
- Precision sewing techniques for curved seams
- Creating even topstitching for a professional finish
- Adding a practical sweatband for comfort
- Tips for customising your hat with embellishments, contrast fabrics, or reversible options
The workshop runs from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch break
Your learning journey is structured for maximum hands-on experience and success:
Morning session: Pattern selection, fabric preparation, cutting, and initial construction
Afternoon session: Assembling hat pieces, adding structure, topstitching, and finishing touches
You will benefit from:
- Step-by-step demonstrations followed by guided practice
- Small class size ensuring personalised support
- Comprehensive printed instructions to take home
- Supportive environment where questions are encouraged
All sewing machines and specialised equipment will be provided.
No prior sewing experience required, though basic familiarity with sewing machines is helpful.
You will need to bring along to the workshop:
- 1/2 yard of medium-weight cotton fabric for outer hat (canvas, denim, or cotton duck work well) or we can provide fabric at a cost of an additional £5 (please bring cash)
- 1/2 yard of lighter cotton fabric for lining (optional for reversible version)
- Your lunch and refreshments
Please wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.
After completing your bucket hat, you can continue developing your skills by enrolling on our Creative Sewing Adventures courses or monthly Saturday workshops.
Free parking is available onsite.
