Valerie Mead

What subjects do you teach?

Jewellery and silversmithing.

How many years have you been teaching?

I have taught adult jewellery courses for over 40 years.

What do you enjoy about teaching adults?

I enjoy sharing and encouraging practical making skills with my students who arrive with an interest or passion for making jewellery. It’s lovely to help them develop and grow in their abilities and confidence to design and make some beautiful pieces.

What got you into jewellery making?

I grew up in an artistic family environment and so always loved making things. I did a degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing Design at Sheffield Hallam University and was a Jeweller in Residence at South Hill Park Arts Centre in Berkshire. I moved to my own studio in Oxford and have been a full-time Jewellery Designer-Maker ever since.

What other passions do you have?

I’ve always been interested in architecture and often small details creep into my jewellery designs.

Why should someone join your classes?

People join learning for leisure classes for many reasons. To persue an interest in jewellery making as well as to meet like-minded people. Our mixed ability courses welcome both beginners new to the subject as well as experienced learners. Our friendly learning environment offers a mixture of individual attention and group learning, and students are encouraged to work on their own designs after initial introductory projects are set for beginners.
