Woodwork – Intermediate: Making a Tote

Course overview

This intermediate woodwork course offers the opportunity to take your skills to the next level. This is achieved by making a variety of joints and additional woodwork processes like veneering during the production of a tote.

To ensure plenty of 1-1 support, the group size will be limited to 8.

Course Tutor: Matthew Biddle

The course takes place in fully-equipped workshops in the renowned Rycotewood Furniture Centre, and all materials are provided.

Please note this course will not run during school holidays.

You will learn:

  • timber selection
  • joint construction, including dovetails and mortice and tenons
  • gluing and assembling
  • Accurate marking out
  • finishing and oiling
  • safely using sharp tools

You will build on your existing woodwork skills and expand your practical knowledge and confidence through workshop practice.

For this intermediate woodwork course we advise you to have previously completed 2 entry level woodwork courses.

You are required to wear safety toe capped shoes whilst in the workshop and we strongly suggest full length trousers.

There are aprons, goggles, and ear defenders in the workshop that you are able to use but you can bring your own PPE if you prefer. It can get quite noisy at times.

All materials will be provided and there are tools available in the workshop.

City of Oxford College offer a broad range of Woodwork courses to progress your woodwork skills.

As this is aimed at intermediate wood workers, you’ve probably started collecting your own tools so feel free to bring them and you probably know how to sharpen them, for which the workshop is equipped.
