Woodwork: Intermediate: Making a hand jointed display shelf

Course overview

This course is aimed at learners with basic woodworking knowledge. You’ve cut dovetails before, you’ve probably started purchasing your own tools, and you know how to sharpen them. You’re ready to build on your existing woodwork skills and expand your practical knowledge and confidence through workshop practice.

This 6-week intermediate woodwork course offers the opportunity to take your skills to the next level. This is achieved by making various joints, including dovetails and mortice and tenons.

Numbers will be limited to 8 people, ensuring plenty of 1-1 support from tutor Chris Woodward.

The course takes place in fully-equipped workshops in the renowned Rycotewood Furniture Centre, and all materials are provided.

You will learn:

  • timber selection
  • joint construction
  • hand planing
  • glueing and assembling
  • accurate marking out
  • finishing and oiling
  • safely using sharp tools

Through workshop practice, you will build on your existing woodwork skills and expand your practical knowledge and confidence.

All materials will be provided, and there are tools available in the workshop.

For this intermediate woodwork course, we advise you to have previously completed two entry-level woodwork courses.

You must wear safety toe-capped shoes whilst in the workshop, and we strongly suggest full-length trousers.

There are aprons, goggles, and ear defenders in the workshop that you can use, but you are welcome to bring your own PPE if you prefer. It can get quite noisy at times.
