Summer Floral Designs
Course overview
This course will show you how to produce designs using summer flowers and foliages for special occasions using a range of containers.
Suitable for those interested in floral design and floristry either newcomers or those with some previous experience.
At Merrist Wood College we pride ourselves on creating the balance between educating our customers on the technical aspects involved, whilst still allowing individual flair and creativity to leave with a unique and personalised arrangement.
Throughout this course, you will learn a variety of techniques each week, including:
- Week 1: hand tie design
- Week 2: vase of flowers from the garden
- Week 3: trug of flowers
- Week 4: hat box
- Week 5: summer border parallel design
You will learn through practical sessions and demonstrations.
To create your flower arrangements, you will be required to bring the following objects to each weekly session:
Week 1: hand tie design
- 3-5 spray Chrysanthemum
- 5-7 focal flowers, such as, roses and carnations
- 7-10 secondary flowers such as, Alstroemeria, Eryngium, Lissianthus
- 40cm long stem foliage, using flowers like, Eucalyptus Pittosporum Hard Ruscus
- cellophane
- ribbon or taffia
- scissors
- notebook
Week 2: vase of flowers from the garden
- 15-20 stems of seasonal flowers
- 5-7 stems of seasonal foliage
- ceramic vase
- chicken wire or copper mesh
- scissors
- notebook
Week 3: trug of flowers
- 10-15 stems of seasonal flowers
- 5-7 stems of foliage
- trug or open basket
- floral foam
- frog and fix
- raffia or ribbon
- scissors
- notebook
Week 4: hat box
- 10-15 stems of seasonal flowers
- 3-5 stems of foliage optional
- small hat box
- floral foam
- plastic dish
- scissors
- notebook
Week 5: summer border parallel design
- 5-7 stems tall flower
- 5-7 stems of single headed flower
- 3-5 stems of small flower can be multi headed
- Moss or short compact foliage
- small trough
- oasis
- scissors
