Course overview
Master mending without a sewing machine and discover the absolute essential starting points for hand sewing so you can easily fix your own and your family’s favourite clothes!
You will discover the absolute essential starting points for hand sewing including:
- needle threading
- stitching strategies so you can fix split seams and dropped hems
- how to sew on a loose button without it looking botched
You don’t need any previous knowledge or experience of sewing for this course.
Vee Tanner is an award-winning dressmaker and costume designer who will expertly guide you through your sewing journey.
This is a very practical course and teaching methods include:
- formal instruction
- discussion
- individual help
- practical demonstration
- practise
Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to bring in items from your own mending pile, so you can easily repair and restore your/your family’s wardrobe favourites.
You will need a basic sewing kit consisting of fabric scissors, small scissors, pins, thread, needles, tape measure, heat erasable pen (e.g. Frixion) and an un-picker.
You don’t need any previous knowledge or experience of sewing for this course.

MEET THE TUTOR
Vee Tanner is a professional costume maker and sewing teacher with over 35 years’ experience of designing and sewing an array of garments and costumes from competition ballroom dance dresses, wedding gowns, as well as everyday wear.
She leads the costume team at the Chiltern Open Air Museum making historical costumes for the Inhabited Houses Project, and has costumed many theatre productions for award winning Rickmansworth Players and leading theatre school, Italia Conti.
Vee founded Sew Bee Yourself, an online sewing club for budding dressmakers to improve their sewing skills and enjoys teaching adults sewing at various venues including Activate Learning’s Reading College.
