

Pottery and Ceramics for Beginners: Thursday Afternoon
Course overview
This practical, workshop-based pottery and ceramics course is perfect for anyone new to this craft. You’ll explore a variety of techniques, including hand-building, decoration, and glazing, equipping you with basic pottery skills. You can take home your unique handmade creations once your pieces are fired in the kiln.
Enjoy both group and individual demonstrations and work at your own pace under the friendly guidance of our experienced tutor. Most learners find immense satisfaction in working with clay, water, and glazes, making this an excellent way to de-stress from a busy day.
Whether you’re looking to continue developing your pottery skills or want to try different ceramics disciplines, we offer additional courses and weekly mixed-discipline ceramics classes to fit your needs.
Please Note: The listed fees cover teaching and the use of facilities. Additional charges apply for bisque and glaze firing of your work. This course runs during term time.
You will explore the properties of clay and learn techniques such as:
- forming using pinching and coiling techniques
- joining techniques
- decoration (slip trailing, glazing, on-glaze painting and slip-glazing)
All this will be under the patient and friendly guidance of our experienced tutor, Jon Pain.
Teaching methods include:
- formal instruction
- discussion
- individual tuition
- practical demonstration
- practical experience
Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to develop your skills according to your own specific needs and pace.
Please bring:
- a sketchbook and something to write with
- a towel
- an apron/wear old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy
- enthusiasm for the subject and a willingness to learn!
You may wish to bring:
- Hand cream and a dust mask
- Washing up gloves if you have sensitive skin
Safety Requirement: You must wear flat shoes as this is a safety requirement. Working with clay can get very messy, so be prepared!

Jon’s career has been in the automotive sector, but he is also passionate about ceramics and wheel-thrown pottery. Trained by Oxford’s own ceramics tutors Jane Hanson and Graham Hudson, Jon has attended a wide range of other courses and masterclasses with current professionals. He enjoys chasing ever-better forms and skills, bringing a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to his teaching.
