Our EFL (English as a Foreign Language) courses prepare you for exams such as Cambridge First, the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Our teachers use our award-winning Learning Philosophy to make sure your studies are fun, relevant to your needs and practical.

When you finish the course, you can:

  • take the exam of your choice
  • take this course again if you need more preparation
  • apply to study another subject at college

Activate Learning is not a test centre, but we will help you book your exam at an official centre.

What’s the difference between an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and an ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) course?

Our EFL courses prepare you for English exams such as Cambridge First, the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), Cambridge Proficiency in English (CPE) and International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

On an ESOL course, our focus is on helping you communicate in English for life in the UK, or other English-speaking countries.

Courses are divided into three terms and the cost for each term depends on your personal circumstances.

Safeguarding notice: Please be aware this course is open to students 16 years of age or older. As such, students classified as minors (16–18-years old) could be in the same learning and social environments as adult students aged 19 years or older.

On our EFL courses, you will learn:

  • effective strategies for the exam of your choice
  • correct English pronunciation
  • accurate spoken English for formal and informal situations
  • English grammar
  • vocabulary and phrases used by native speakers
  • how to write reports, letters, and articles
  • study skills

When you finish an EFL course, you can:

  • take the exam of your choice
  • take this course again if you need more preparation
  • apply to study another subject at college

The maximum class size is 25 students. You will:

  • take practice exams that will be scored
  • improve your general English using authentic roleplays
  • work in pairs or small groups to improve your spoken fluency,
  • accuracy and pronunciation
  • get scores and feedback from your teacher practice exam results and homework

To join a course, you must speak with a member of the teaching team first. They will check that this is the right course for you. You must be able to study in the college for at least two hours per week.

There may be additional fees for this course such as school trips. Textbooks are included but exam costs are extra. Please ask at your assessment for further details.

When you first come to the college, please bring:

  • your passport, EU ID card or Visa (if you entered the UK from outside the EU)
  • If you entered the UK to join a spouse or relative, you will also need to bring your spouse’s/relative’s passport
