Oxford Art Safari – Exploring Creativity in Summer: MAKE YOUR FIRST QUILT

Course overview

Embark on an enriching journey into the world of quilting with a perfect summertime escape for adults seeking new avenues of creativity.

Discover the process of crafting your very own quilt, a timeless piece that could become a wall hanging, playmat, or cherished cot quilt. Over two immersive days, you’ll unleash your creativity as you learn to make design choices, expertly cut and piece together fabrics, master the technique of chain piecing, add intricate quilting details, and elegantly finish your masterpiece with binding.

No prior quilting experience? No problem. Our experienced tutor will expertly guide you through each step, ensuring you feel confident and empowered throughout the process. Plus, you’ll receive comprehensive handouts with access to exclusive videos and online resources, empowering you to continue your quilting journey long after the course concludes.

You will be making a square quilt (big enough to be a wall hanging, playmat or cot quilt). By the end of the two days, you will have a lovely quilt to keep or to gift.

You will make design decisions, cut and join fabric pieces, learn how to chain piece, add quilting, and finish your quilt with binding.

We recommend you have some experience using a sewing machine to make a straight stitch, but we will help you if you need to learn on the course.

You will also need to bring the following materials, which are not included in the cost of the course:

  • a charm pack (pre-cut quilting fabric measuring 5 inches square)
  • 1m fabric for the background
  • 1m fabric for the back of your quilt
  • 5m of fabric for binding
  • a rotary cutter with a 45mm blade
  • good quality thread

Quilting rulers, mats, basic sewing kit and sewing machines will be provided, although you are welcome to bring along your own if you prefer.

Don’t forget to pack a sustaining lunch, a refillable water bottle, and any additional refreshments to keep you fuelled throughout the day.

Continue your quilting journey with confidence and explore our array of quilting courses offered throughout the year at City of Oxford Colleg

Sara learned to quilt as a teenager and has spent the last twenty years exploring different techniques and accumulating a very large collection of fabric! She loves modern quilting and intricate patterns with lots of detail. Her focus is machine piecing and needleturn applique, but also enjoys English and foundation paper piecing. She has recently acquired a 12ft long arm machine and is having fun experimenting with computerised quilting and ruler work.

She is a member of the Oxfordshire Modern Quilters Guild. Her work has appeared in Love Patchwork & Quilting Magazine and fabric catalogues, as well as received recognition internationally in sew along competitions.
