Oxford Art Safari – Exploring Creativity in Summer: CREATE YOUR OWN PAPER ZINE

Course overview

Join us for a journey of creativity and self-expression!

Explore mark making and origami in this workshop where you’ll learn, through a series of engaging exercises, how to combine two traditional techniques to craft your very own paper zine. With step-by-step guidance, you’ll use found tools, painting, drawing and collage to create beauty, depth and texture and create your very own zine.

Whether you arrive with a specific idea in mind or embrace spontaneity with our prompt cards and templates, you’ll find ample inspiration to fuel your creativity. This hands-on experience encourages experimentation and self-expression, as you adorn your zines with personal touches that reflect your unique style.

The day will begin with simple mark-making exercises with found materials, setting the stage for your artistic exploration. As the session unfolds, you’ll progress to constructing simple one-page zines, which will then evolve into more complex structures using various folding techniques and templates. These versatile zines can serve as platforms for narrative storytelling or stand as distinctive artist books, limited only by your imagination.

Combine origami and mark making in a fusion of two traditional techniques!

This is a practical hands-on session where the tutor will guide you through the construction of the zines which you’re free to decorate in any way you wish.

You’ll learn how to create 8-page and 16-page zines, as well as more complex constructions that work well as artist’s books.

All essential materials and instructions will be provided, but feel free to bring along any materials you’re fond of working with, so they can be worked into your designs.

Don’t forget to pack a sustaining lunch, a refillable water bottle, and any additional refreshments to keep you fuelled throughout the day.

Continue your creative journey by exploring the other courses available at City of Oxford College.
