Oxford Art Safari – Exploring Creativity in Summer: AN INTRODUCTION TO HAND-STITCHING PATCHWORK (English Paper Piecing)

Course overview

Discover a mindful technique that allows you to create beautiful embellishments for clothes, craft small projects, or even embark on the timeless tradition of quilting.

In this enchanting workshop, you’ll be introduced to the traditional method of English paper piecing, a patchwork technique using templates. Guided by our experienced tutor, you’ll learn the art of selecting fabrics, mastering the use of templates, and seamlessly joining the pieces together to create beautiful designs.

Under the tutor’s guidance, you’ll craft a charming hexagon flower, a versatile motif that can be appliquéd into a mug rug or used to embellish a favourite garment with a touch of handmade elegance.

Whether you’re a seasoned quilter or a complete novice, this workshop welcomes participants aged 12 and above (accompanied by an adult) to embark on a creative journey together. Please book two places if you both want to participate in the workshop.

Throughout the session, you’ll receive personalised support to ensure your project reaches its full potential. Plus, our tutor will provide a comprehensive handout complete with instructional videos and online resources, empowering you to continue your quilting adventure long after the workshop concludes.

All you need to bring is your enthusiasm and any cotton fabric you’d like to incorporate into your masterpiece. Don’t forget to bring along a garment if you envision using your creation as a stylish embellishment for your wardrobe—think jackets, denim shirts, and more! You can appliqué this project to any clothes which aren’t stretchy. All other basic materials will be provided.

Don’t forget to pack a sustaining lunch, a refillable water bottle, and any additional refreshments to keep you fuelled throughout the day.
