
Make a Laptop Riser/Bookstand: Intermediate
Course overview
Enhance your woodworking repertoire with this satisfying intermediate project. This carpentry course is ideal for those who have mastered the basics and are keen to tackle more intricate work.
Over six focused sessions, you’ll craft an elegant and practical laptop riser that doubles as a bookstand by making various joints, including dovetails, mortice and tenons.
For this intermediate woodwork course, we advise you to have previously completed an entry-level woodwork course.

The course is led by experienced and qualified tutor Alex Chávez Smith and is held in the fully-equipped workshops of the renowned Rycotewood Furniture Centre.
Places are limited to a maximum of eight learners and all materials and equipment are provided.
This course runs term time only.
You will cover:
- timber selection
- joint construction
- hand planing
- glueing and assembling
- accurate marking out
- finishing and oiling
- safely using sharp tools
At the end of this course, you will have made a hand-crafted laptop riser or bookstand.
Our experienced tutor will provide group demonstrations and individual instruction, guidance and mentoring within a supportive learning environment.
All tools and materials are provided.
Please wear stout closed footwear and clothes that you don’t mind getting covered in sawdust.
There are aprons, goggles, and ear defenders in the workshop that you are able to use, but feel free to bring your own PPE if you prefer. It can get quite noisy at times
On completion of the course, you will be ready to pursue your own DIY projects and/or progress to one of our other courses.
