As gardeners we spend a lot of time caring for our plants, but too many of us neglect the vital resource that is beneath our feet–the soil. During this short workshop we will get some hands-on experience in assessing the main qualities of our garden soils and evaluating our options to maximise plant health and growth. Bring along a bag of soil from your own garden too, in order to go back home with some valuable starting points for improving your displays and crops.

This course is suitable for gardeners, novice gardeners, those considering an allotment or moving to a new house.

Merrist Wood has nearly half a century of experience with the land including a long collection of medals from top horticultural shows, including RHS Chelsea and RHS Hampton Court. Your tutor has over 30 years experience in teaching plant and soil sciences to many who have gone on to win awards of their own.

Most of your learning will be hands-on outside with some classroom based.

You will need to wear suitable footwear and clothing for being outside. Please bring a sample of your own garden soil on the day.
