Functional Skills Maths Level 1: Online GCSE Preparation course

Course overview

Uniquely flexible, this online maths course is designed to fit learning around your busy life, even if you are working full-time or caring for family. You will receive help from expert tutors to guide you through your learning journey!

By gradually building your knowledge and confidence, using our Learning Philosophy to adapt the course content to how you would like to learn. Ultimately, we will ensure you are confident you will successfully pass your maths GCSE. So best we can plan your journey, you will be asked to complete a short assessment to determine whether this course is the right level for you or you might be offered an alternative online pathway as a suitable best option.

Functional Skills courses are government-funded and free if you are over 19 years old and meet our eligibility criteria. This will be shared with you when you apply for the course.

Please note: If you are not eligible, the course fee is £724.

This Level 1 Functional Skills course gives an important foundation of mathematical skills required to get onto a GCSE maths qualification. This course is equivalent to a GCSE Grade 2–3 (or E-D in the A–G grading scheme).

With progression to our GCSE Online course in mind, from this course, you will gain:

  • a free online Functional Skills maths (Level 1) course certificate
  • access to past papers, equation samples and academic support from our in-house maths tutor
  • the expert support and teaching of our OFSTED ‘Good’ facilities
  • progression to a free GCSE course, including final exams 1

In this bridging course to GCSEs, you will build confidence on the practical application of maths in real-life situations, covering:

  • whole numbers
  • fractions
  • decimals
  • percentages
  • calculating perimeter, area and volume
  • extracting information from graphs and charts
  • GCSE preparation

No previous qualifications are required, however, you will be asked to complete a short assessment to determine whether this course is the right level for you.

As this course is delivered online through ‘live’ teaching sessions and digital materials, you will need access to the internet from a PC, laptop or tablet.

Please note, while the course is provided online, you will need to travel to one of our seven test centres to sit your exams, located in:

  • Oxfordshire: City of Oxford College, Banbury and Bicester College
  • Berkshire: Reading College, Bracknell and Wokingham College
  • Surrey: Guildford College, Farnham College, and Merrist Wood College
