FEPA PA1 and PA2 Safe Use of Pesticides Practical (NPTC)
These courses are designed for sprayer operators and all those whose work involves the use of pesticides.
Practical instruction is carried out by highly qualified tutors in the extensive ornamental grounds, plant nursery, woodlands and sports turf areas at the College, using both hand tools and modern machinery and equipment. Merrist Wood has developed an excellent reputation for horticultural expertise and coupled with our award-winning Learning Philosophy, we are able to offer a practical education, tailored to your needs.
PA1 is a theory based unit and must be passed in conjunction with at least one of the practical based units PA2 and/or PA6.
PA1 covers the following:
- Codes of practice for plant protection products
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Environmental issues including dealing with bees and dealing with watercourses
Trainees must be at least 16-years old and have a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy.
FEPA PA2 Award Boom Sprayer
All applicants should have up to date tractor driving experience and, ideally, hold a nationally-recognised tractor driving qualification, e.g., NPTC, LANTRA or NPORS, to participate in the PA2 course. Depending on experience a Certificate of Competence may also be suitable.
- Preparation of prime mover and equipment
- Functions of the control panel
- Boom suspension and break-back devices
- Preparation of concentrated pesticides
- Cleaning and decontamination of the applicator
Please bring your own personal protective equipment: overalls, wellington boots, protective gloves and face shield. Candidates must have passed the PA1 module.
Through theoretical sessions for PA1 and through practical sessions and practical assessment for PA2.
For PA1 you will need a pen/pencil, notebook and calculator.
For PA2 your own personal protective equipment, specifications will be in the joining instructions.
Following this course you can progress to PA6 which is spraying using a back pack.
