Introduction to Sewing

Course overview

Want to start sewing with a machine but have no experience? Begin your journey and develop your skills with our range of sewing courses.

After this course, you will be able to sew independently and optionally progress and develop your sewing skills further with our ‘Sewing Your First Garment’ course.

Please note: This course takes place on Mondays. Courses are 5 weeks, except the course beginning on 22 April, which is 4 weeks.

22, 29 April, 13 and 20 May (4 weeks). Fee: £125 (£105 + £20 material costs)

3 – 24 June, 1 July (5 weeks). Fee: £150 (£131.25 + £20 materials c

You will learn how to thread a sewing machine and master essential sewing techniques including sewing seams and hems and how to work with stable woven fabrics so that you can confidently sew independently.

This is a very practical hands-on course. By the end, you will have completed a coaster, pin cushion, simple tote bag and/or an apron project, depending on your speed and time.

You will need a basic sewing kit consisting of fabric scissors, small scissors, pins, thread, needles, tape measure, heat erasable pen (e.g. Frixion) and an un-picker.

You will be provided with 1.5 meters of Calico for your sewing project(s). This is a plain-woven textile made from unbleached and often not fully processed cotton. The cost is included in your fee.

This sewing course will give you the confidence to start basic machine sewing independently and be ready to take the next course ‘Sew Your First Garment’.
