Countryside Habitat Management (Adults Part-time Thursday)

Course overview

This course is suitable for conservation volunteers, career changers, returners to work, employment CPD, improving qualifications, and keen interested conservationists.

Ideal for those who want to enhance the direction of their employment or life experience, and improve their understanding of living, working and the managing of our countryside, wildlife and conservation.

This is essential training for Trust Volunteers, Land Based Industries, Estates, Farming, Councils, Golf Courses and graduates who need to up skill in competency tickets, qualifications, CPD, insurance and work experience.

The modules cover all the practical skills and underpinning knowledge that you will need to undertake the – Merrist Wood Diploma in ‘Practical Habitat Management’ which is designed to satisfy that yearning to learn more about the countryside, and the practical management needed to support the wildlife, the history and the traditional skills that sustain and conserve the habitats within it.

You will cover:

Coppicing, pollarding, hedge planting, hedgelaying, greenwood craft making, traditional tools, charcoal burning, post and rail fencing, strainer assembly and stocknet fencing, gate and stile assembly, dry stone random walling, retaining wall building, ditch, wetlands and pond management, woodland management, heathland management, conservation livestock welfare tasks, lambing and lamb welfare, grazing and grasslands, habitats surveying and recording, species identification, wildlife ecology, history and traditional management of habitats, rights of way, mensuration, silviculture, management planning, grant aid, veteran and ancient trees, tree hazard assessment, project management, leading groups of volunteers, health and safety risk assessing, interview presentations, public event planning, visits and guest speakers.

No exams are involved, course work is continually assessed and internally verified.
