Community Wellbeing: Painting and Drawing Inspired by Nature with Jill Iliffe

Course overview

What better way to spend some quality time than at the beautiful 400-acre Merrist Wood campus enjoying painting and drawing in a relaxed and friendly group using this wonderful environment as your inspiration. Whether you are new to art or more experienced, this five week course will allow you to spend some purposeful and relaxing time creating your own personalised work in response to nature.

Under the guidance of our expert tutor, you will gain skills, confidence and enjoy creating nature inspired drawings and paintings. By spending time with like-minded people in nature we hope that you will gain a sense of enjoyment and improve your wellbeing.

Our Community Wellbeing programme* has been designed to include courses that will develop your skills, confidence and promoting a sense of wellbeing. Each workshop will be delivered at a gentle pace with lots of tutor support and is suitable for beginners and more experienced creatives.

*Please visit our Community Wellbeing page to see if you are eligible for a free place.

You will be shown how to work outside responding to what you see in front of you, each week having a new focus such as landscapes, animals and botanical focussed drawings and paintings.

You will learn how to use your sketchbook as a way of relaxing and as a resource that you may work on to create a more finished piece. Techniques taught will include the use of linework, colour, tone, composition and perspective to create your drawings and paintings.

The workshop will take place in the beautiful surroundings of Merrist Wood campus, with its array of natural resources. Your tutor will be on hand to guide you with demonstrations and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and experiment with materials.

Depending on the weather some of the classes will take place in our base room.

All basic materials will be provided but you may wish to bring your own including a sketchbook, specialist paper (ie watercolour) and paint brushes.
