Discover the joy of sewing in this 6-week Community Wellbeing course designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike! Based at Activate Learning’s Technology campus in the heart of the Leys, you’ll learn essential sewing machine skills while creating beautiful, personalised bunting and a practical tote bag to take home. 

Our Community Wellbeing programme aims to boost confidence and enhance mental and emotional well-being through creative expression. In a supportive and inclusive environment, you’ll connect with fellow learners while developing new skills. Small group sizes ensure personalized attention and create an ideal setting for sharing ideas and techniques. 

Course Details 

Dates: May 6, 13, 20 and June 3, 10, 17, 2025 

Timings: Tuesday mornings, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM 

Tutor: You’ll be guided by expert tutor Sara Fernandez

Our free, government-funded Wellbeing Programme is designed for adults aged 19 and over (at course start). These courses help develop skills, knowledge, and confidence while improving mental wellbeing. Participants receive support in advancing their creative interests and learn valuable tools for daily wellbeing management. Introduction to Sewing Machines

  • Understanding machine parts and functions 
  • Threading techniques and bobbin winding 
  • Adjusting stitch settings 

 Sewing Fundamentals

  • Fabric selection and characteristics 
  • Choosing appropriate needles and threads 
  • Basic stitching techniques 

Project Skills

  • Planning and measuring for bunting and tote bag 
  • Cutting techniques and pattern use 
  • Straight and zigzag stitching 
  • Corner pivoting and edge finishing 
  • Personalisation and embellishment techniques 

Learning combines theoretical instruction and hands-on practice, covering: 

  • Essential sewing and measuring techniques 
  • Basic garment construction 
  • Working with non-stretch fabrics 
  • Practical project completion 

Included: 

  • All essential materials (fabric, thread, pattern templates) 
  • Use of sewing machines 
  • Professional instruction 
  • Option to bring your own cotton fabric (non-stretch, such as craft or quilting cotton) 

What to bring: 

  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn 
  • Notebook and pen 
  • Optional: Your preferred fabric (if you have specific colours or patterns in mind)
