Community Wellbeing — Introduction to Carpentry: Build Your Skills, Craft a Cabinet
Course overview
Are you interested in working with your hands and creating beautiful, functional objects out of wood? Join us for our Community Wellbeing Introduction to Carpentry course and learn how to build your very own cabinet!
Throughout this carpentry course, you’ll apply your new skills to design and build your own custom cabinet. This project will take you through the entire woodworking process, from initial design to final finishing.
You’ll be guided by tutor Giles Davies an expert carpenter and cabinet maker.
Our Community Wellbeing Programme offers a series of free, government-funded courses to develop skills, knowledge, and confidence, and improve mental wellbeing for adults aged 19 and over (at the start of the course). Participation can help those managing mental health conditions that have a mild-moderate impact on their day-to-day lives. By taking part in Wellbeing Programmes, individuals will receive support in progressing their creative skills and interests to the next level as well as tools to help manage wellbeing on a daily basis. In this comprehensive, hands-on course, you’ll discover the fundamentals of carpentry, including:
- Tool identification and safety
- Wood types and selection
- Measuring and marking techniques
- Cutting and shaping wood
- Joining methods (nails, screws, and basic joinery)
- Cabinet design and construction
- Door and drawer making
- Hardware installation
- Sanding and finishing techniques
Our experienced tutor will teach you how to:
- make a basic drawing with the dimensions of what you want to create
- break that down into individual components and create a cutting list
- cut those components using a table saw
- use a router
- glue and screw components together
- use filler and a sander
- mount hinges and attach handles or knobs
This course is perfect for beginners with little to no woodworking experience. Whether you’re looking to start a new hobby, tackle home improvement projects, or explore a potential career path, this course will give you a solid foundation in carpentry with a focus on cabinet making.

Tutor Profile: Giles Davies
Giles Davies is a self- employed carpenter and cabinet maker with a breadth of experience, from working with a variety of companies making bespoke furniture, to working with young people as a youth worker. He uses all sorts of creative mediums such as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, printing, digital imaging, film making/editing and, of course, carpentry.
