Community Wellbeing: COMMUNITY WOODWORK HUB at the Leys

Course overview

Explore an opportunity to participate in woodworking classes near you, in a friendly and welcoming environment.

Our Community Woodwork Hub at our Technology Campus in Blackbird Leys is about sharing skills and knowledge, having fun with like-minded people, working on ideas and enjoy the process of making and mending. You’ll also gain a renewed sense of purpose and belonging in the process.

The Community Woodwork hub aims to boost confidence and improve mental and emotional wellbeing. The woodworking sessions provide a wonderful opportunity to explore creativity, learn new techniques, and enjoy the power of bringing your ideas to life. You’ll benefit from a supportive and inclusive environment, connecting with others who share your interest, guided by tutor Samantha Ashley-Morgan.

The group size ensures personalised attention and feedback. You can share your work, gain insights from others, and develop your skills in a collaborative atmosphere. Each session is interactive and hands-on, giving you plenty of opportunities to practise and refine your techniques.

Our Wellbeing Programme offers a series of free, government-funded courses to develop skills, knowledge, and confidence and improve mental wellbeing for adults aged 19 and over (at the start of the course). Participation can help those managing mental health conditions that have a mild-moderate impact on their day to day lives. By taking part in Wellbeing Programmes, individuals will receive support in progressing their creative skills and interests to the next level, as well as tools to help them manage their wellbeing on a daily basis.

We offer a 2.5 hour session on Thursdays, beginning on 7 November 2024. You can attend as many of the sessions as you wish!

2024: 7,14,21,28 November, 5,12,19 December

The woodwork hub is for people of all abilities who want to improve their practical skills using everyday tools found in the workshop – such as saws, tape measures, chisels, etc.

You will learn how to safely use hand tools and power tools and develop basic DIY and carpentry skills.

You will learn how to repair items and will also be introduced to a variety of simple techniques enabling you to take on projects and help improve the quality of any woodwork jobs you undertake at home.

Tutor demonstration and hands-on practical experience will gradually build your confidence and group learning will be reinforced and supported with one-to-one assistance.

Your tutor will advise you and guide you through a range of tips and tricks to help you progress your skills and confidence.

No previous experience necessary. Please wear sensible shoes and clothing and bring along paper and a pen to make notes.

Activate Learning offers a wide variety of courses, diplomas and degrees that you can progress to once your confidence has grown, should you wish to progress and explore your skills further.

Please note: Each learner must commit to an Individual Learning Plan, which will be reviewed at three points in the year. Your tutor will have a 1:1 conversation with you to identify your goals and outcomes for the year ahead. This will be reviewed at the end of the year when you will discuss your next steps with your tutor.
