Community Learning: Woodwork Hub

Course overview

Our Community Woodwork Hub at Blackbird Leys is about sharing skills and knowledge, having fun with like-minded people, and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. It’s a social place that is open to adults, regardless of ability or gender, to work on ideas and enjoy the process of making and mending. Woodwork hubs also reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, allowing members to improve their mental well-being and remain independent.

You’ll learn how to make repairs using a variety of simple techniques and everyday tools, to help improve the quality of any woodwork jobs you undertake at home.

You are welcome to join us on any or all of the following dates in 2023:

March 7,14,21,28, April 18, 25, May 2,9,16,23,30.

This is one of our Community Learning courses. Our Community Learning programme offers a series of FREE courses to develop skills, knowledge, confidence and improve mental well-being for adults aged 19 and over. You are eligible for these funded places if you are aged 19 or over (at the start of the course) and either:

  • have a mental health condition or difficulty
  • are employed and earning an annual salary of less than £18,525 per annum
  • are in receipt of state benefit in your own name and unemployed or working and earning less than £338 per month (or £541 for household claims)
  • are a single parent
  • have a social or emotional difficulty

The Community Woodwork Hub is for people of all abilities who want to improve their practical skills using everyday tools found in the workshop – such as saws, tape measures, chisels, etc.

There will be projects to show you how to fix things and you will also be introduced to a variety of simple techniques to help improve the quality of any woodwork jobs you undertake at home.

You will learn how to use hand tools and power tools safely for basic DIY and carpentry skills.

There will be tutor demonstrations you will build your confidence through hands-on practical experience. You will learn as a group and one on one help will also be provided.

Your tutor will advise you and guide you through the tips and tricks that will make each process easier.
